Card story

Collector history

Things most collectors don't know

  • T206 ended because of a SCOTUS antitrust ruling. The American Tobacco Company was broken up in 1911 under the Sherman Act; the set didn't 'run its course' — the company that printed it stopped existing.
  • Cobb didn't pose for this card. The Red Portrait is painted from a 1908 Charles Conlon photograph. It's the only one of Cobb's four T206 poses traced to a Conlon original.
  • The 'Cobb back' is the rarest T206 in the entire 524-card set — fewer than 30 known. The back (Cobb endorsing his own tobacco brand), not the front, is what makes a Cobb-back Cobb worth 10x a Sweet Caporal Cobb of the same grade.
  • Period copies show a faint 'registration shadow' from the wet-on-wet lithographic process. Reprints can't replicate it because the press technology no longer exists. This is the under-discussed authenticity tell — many fakes get caught here before they reach grading.
  • Wagner is the famous one because he objected to kids buying tobacco. Cobb didn't object. The fact that Cobb is the 'common' star and Wagner the 'rare' one is a direct artifact of one player's ethics — not relative talent or fame at the time.

Condition signals to watch

  • Centering — T206s were sheet-cut by hand. Even VG copies frequently run 70/30 or worse.
  • Color rub — the red background bleeds and chalks; high-end raw copies retain saturation on all four borders.
  • Back stamp — Sweet Caporal and Piedmont are the common backs. Rarer backs (Hindu, El Principe de Gales, etc.) trade as separate cards in the directory.
