A professional baseball outfielder, he played in Major League Baseball from 1964 to 1972 with the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, Montreal Expos, and Cleveland Indians. Phillips was signed as an amateur free agent by the Phillies on September 21, 1960, and began his minor league career in 1961 with the Class C Magic Valley Cowboys of the Pioneer League. His early professional seasons were spent developing his hitting and adjusting to breaking pitches before reaching the majors.
