Alonza Benjamin Bumbry, born April 21, 1947, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, was a Major League Baseball outfielder who played for the Baltimore Orioles and San Diego Padres from 1972 through 1985. He attended Virginia State College on a basketball scholarship before the school's baseball program restarted; in his lone season he batted .578. Prior to his MLB career, Bumbry served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Bronze Star. He won the 1973 American League Rookie of the Year award, earned an All-Star selection, and was part of a World Series championship team. He is a member of both the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.
