Al Evans

Dossier
Al Evans was an American Major League Baseball catcher who played from 1939 to 1951. He spent the bulk of his career with the Washington Senators (1939-1942, 1944-1950) and finished with the Boston Red Sox in 1951. His career was interrupted by service in the U.S. Navy in 1943. Over 704 games he posted a .250 batting average on 514 hits, with 13 home runs and 211 RBI. A contact, line-drive hitter rather than a power threat, Evans was valued mainly for his defense, recording a .979 fielding percentage across 647 appearances behind the plate and noted for a strong throwing arm. His most active season came in 1949, when he played 109 games and hit .271 with 42 RBI. After his playing career he worked as a manager and scout for several organizations. Evans played during the 1940s, an era in which many rosters were shaped by World War II military service.
