Alvin Crowder

Dossier
Alvin Floyd Crowder (January 11, 1899 – April 3, 1972) was a right-handed pitcher who spent eleven American League seasons with the Washington Senators, St. Louis Browns, and Detroit Tigers. Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Crowder served nearly three years in the Army during World War I, with postings in the Philippines and Siberia, where he first learned the game. His nickname "General" came not from military rank but from General Enoch Crowder, architect of the World War I draft lottery. Across 402 career appearances, he compiled a 167–115 record, 150 complete games, 16 shutouts, and a 4.12 ERA over 2,344⅓ innings.
