Barney Holden

Bernard "Barney" Holden (1881–1948) was a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He began his career in Winnipeg's amateur leagues before becoming one of the first professional ice hockey players in history when he joined the Portage Lakes Hockey Club in Houghton, Michigan, in 1904. He scored the first goal in the first game of the first professional hockey league on December 9, 1904. Holden won two International Professional Hockey League championships with Portage Lakes in 1905–06 and 1906–07, later playing in the National Hockey Association with teams including the Montreal Shamrocks and Quebec Bulldogs.
