Barney McCosky

Barney McCosky was an American Major League Baseball outfielder who played center and left field from 1939 to 1953. He played for the Detroit Tigers (1939-1942, 1946), Philadelphia Athletics (1946-1948, 1950-1951), Cincinnati Reds (1951), and Cleveland Indians (1951-1953). Over 1,170 games he batted .312 with 24 home runs and 397 RBI. As a rookie in 1939 he led American League center fielders in putouts, and in 1940 he hit .340 with 200 hits, tied for the AL lead, and led the league with 19 triples; that season Detroit won the American League pennant. His career was interrupted by three seasons of U.S. Navy service during World War II, from 1942 through 1945. In 1995 he was inducted into the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame. McCosky played during the 1940s alongside Detroit contemporaries including Hank Greenberg and Charlie Gehringer.
