Ben Chapman

Dossier

William Benjamin Chapman (1908–1993) played outfield in Major League Baseball from 1930 to 1946, spending his most prominent years with the New York Yankees. A four-time American League All-Star, he was part of the 1932 World Series championship team and batted .302 across 12 major league seasons. Between 1926 and 1943 he accumulated more stolen bases than any other player, leading the AL in that category four times. He also led the AL in outfield assists and double plays twice each. Chapman later returned to the majors as a pitcher and became player-manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, where he was fired in 1948 following his conduct toward Jackie Robinson during the 1947 season.
