Dossier

William Beck "Swish" Nicholson (December 11, 1914 – March 8, 1996) was a right fielder who spent 16 seasons in Major League Baseball with the Philadelphia Athletics (1936), Chicago Cubs (1939–1948), and Philadelphia Phillies (1949–1953). A native of Chestertown, Maryland, he attended Washington College and batted left-handed. Nicholson finished his career with a .268 batting average, 235 home runs, and 948 RBI across 1,677 games. He twice led the National League in home runs. His nickname derived from the determined practice swings he took before each pitch, which often missed — in 1944, he became one of only seven players in major league history to receive an intentional walk with the bases loaded.
