Dossier

Wilfrid Arthur "Wild Beaver" Coutu (March 1, 1892 – February 25, 1977) was a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman who played ten NHL seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, Hamilton Tigers, and Boston Bruins. He won the Stanley Cup with Montreal in 1923–24 and served as team captain in 1925–26. Coutu accumulated 42 penalty minutes in a single 1923 playoff game against Ottawa, a record that still stands. In 1927 he attacked a referee following a Stanley Cup Final loss, earning a lifetime NHL ban — the only such ban ever imposed — after which he played in the C-AHL and AHA before coaching the Providence Reds.
