Dossier

Robert William Brown (1924-2021) was an American third baseman who played eight seasons in Major League Baseball, all with the New York Yankees, from 1946 to 1952 and again in 1954. His playing time was interrupted by 19 months of military service during the Korean War. Used primarily as a platoon third baseman, Brown appeared in 548 regular-season games and compiled a .279 batting average with 22 home runs and 237 runs batted in. He was a member of four World Series championship teams (1947, 1949, 1950, and 1951) and was particularly effective in postseason play, batting .439 (18-for-31) across 17 World Series games, one of the highest postseason averages in major-league history. Brown pursued a medical degree while playing, attending classes during the offseason, and left baseball to practice as a cardiologist in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. He later returned to the sport as an executive, serving briefly as interim president of the Texas Rangers in 1974 and as president of the American League from 1984 to 1994. A veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, Brown died in 2021 at age 96.
