John Melvin "Bubba" Phillips (February 24, 1928 – June 22, 1993) was a professional baseball third baseman from Macon, Mississippi. He played ten seasons in Major League Baseball for the Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox, and Cleveland Indians between 1955 and 1964. Before his baseball career, Phillips starred in football at the University of Southern Mississippi, earning Little All-America honors as a running back and team captain in 1950. He turned down an offer from the San Francisco 49ers to sign with the Detroit Tigers organization. Phillips was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1972.
