César Cedeño
Dossier
César Cedeño Encarnación, born February 25, 1951, is a Dominican former professional baseball player and coach who played as a center fielder in Major League Baseball from 1970 to 1986. He spent the most prominent portion of his career with the Houston Astros, where in 1980 he helped the franchise win its first-ever National League Western Division title and reach the postseason for the first time.
A four-time All-Star, Cedeño combined speed and power to rank among the best all-around players of his era. He set the standard for major league outfielders in the early 1970s, winning five consecutive Gold Glove Awards between 1972 and 1976. He became only the second player in Major League Baseball history to hit 20 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season, and the only one to do so in three consecutive seasons. In addition to the Astros, he played for the Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals, and Los Angeles Dodgers.
After retiring as a player, Cedeño spent several years as a minor league hitting coach in the Astros and Nationals organizations. He was inducted into the Houston Astros Hall of Fame in 2020. More than 40 years after he last played for the team, Cedeño still holds the Astros franchise record for career stolen bases.
