Dossier

Carl Scheib was a right-handed pitcher who spent the bulk of his Major League Baseball career with the Philadelphia Athletics (1943–1945, 1947–1954) before a brief stint with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1954. Born in Gratz, Pennsylvania on January 1, 1927, Scheib became the youngest pitcher to record a strikeout in baseball history when he appeared in an Athletics game on September 26, 1943, at age 16. He was also a capable hitter: in 1951 he batted .396 in 53 at-bats, the highest mark for a pitcher at that volume since 1925. He finished his career with a .250 batting average over 468 at-bats.
