Charles Comiskey was the first baseman who became a manager who became an owner — the founder and proprietor of the Chicago White Sox, one of the eight charter franchises of the American League when it claimed major-league status in 1901. Comiskey had played and managed for the St. Louis Browns of the American Association in the 1880s before settling into ownership, where his tight-fisted handling of player salaries during the late 1910s would eventually contribute to the resentments behind the 1919 Black Sox scandal. This card is a Sporting News supplement dated October 21, 1909 — one of the oversized photographic premiums distributed loose by the trade weekly between 1909 and 1913, depicting Comiskey in his role as the White Sox owner. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1939 in the executive category.
