Dossier

Charles Jacob Hollocher (1896–1940) was a shortstop for the Chicago Cubs from 1918 to 1924. Born in St. Louis, he helped Chicago capture the National League pennant in 1918, a season shortened by World War I, leading the NL that year in games (131), at bats (509), hits (161), and singles (130). In 1922 he set what remains the Cubs' single-season record for at bats per strikeout (118.4), and his five strikeouts across that season stands as the NL record for a player appearing in at least 150 games. Hollocher left the team in August 1923 due to depression tied to an undiagnosed intestinal condition; a 1924 comeback attempt went unfinished.
