Dossier

Charles Cason Gassaway, nicknamed 'Sheriff,' was an American left-handed pitcher whose 16-season professional career (1937–1952) included all or parts of three seasons in Major League Baseball for the Chicago Cubs (1944), Philadelphia Athletics (1945), and Cleveland Indians (1946). Born in Gassaway, Tennessee, he stood 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighed 210 pounds. He won 153 games in the minor leagues, including a career-high 17 victories in 1944 for the Milwaukee Brewers of the American Association, which earned him a late-season call-up to the Cubs for two starts. The 1945 season, the final year of the World War II player shortage, was his only complete year in the major leagues, spent with the Philadelphia Athletics. His major league career fell within the wartime period.
