Charlie "Choo Choo" Justice (1924-2003) was a halfback who played college football for the North Carolina Tar Heels. A native of Asheville, he was drafted into the Navy in 1943, where a sportswriter gave him the nickname "Choo Choo." He played tailback at North Carolina under coach Carl Snavely for four years; the 1946-49 seasons became known as the "Justice Era." He was named an All-American in 1948 and 1949 and finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting both years. At North Carolina he ran or threw for 64 touchdowns and set a team total-offense record of 4,883 yards that stood until 1994. Justice played professionally for the Washington Redskins in the NFL in 1950 and from 1952 to 1954. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1961 and died on October 17, 2003.
