Chico Fernández

Dossier

Humberto "Chico" Fernández Pérez (March 2, 1932 – June 11, 2016) was a Cuban professional baseball shortstop who played in Major League Baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, Detroit Tigers, and New York Mets from 1956 to 1963. Born in Havana, Fernández threw and batted right-handed. He spent three and a half years in the minors, earning International League All-Star shortstop honors in 1954 and batting a career-best .301 in 1955, but could not displace Pee Wee Reese in Brooklyn. He was finally recalled in July 1956 before moving on to a longer run with Philadelphia and Detroit.
