Charles Albert "Chief" Bender (1884–1954) was the Philadelphia Athletics' postseason ace through the Connie Mack dynasty. Born May 5, 1884 in Crow Wing County, Minnesota, he debuted in 1903 and pitched twenty-three MLB seasons through 1925. In 1911 he went 17–5 with a 2.16 ERA, helping deliver the World Series, and followed with 13–8, 2.74 ERA in 1912. A 6–2”, 185-pound right-handed thrower and hitter, Bender holds an unusually wide footprint across the early caramel and tobacco era: T204 Ramly, plus E90-1 American Caramel, E92 Croft's Candy, Cocoa, Dockman, and Nadja Caramels, E93 Standard Caramel, E95 Philadelphia Caramel, E103 Williams Caramels, and the E125 American Caramel Die Cuts. He died May 22, 1954 in Philadelphia and is buried in the Cedar Lawn Section, Lot 516 of Hillside Cemetery in Roslyn, Pennsylvania. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1953.
