Clarence James Maddern was an outfielder who appeared in 104 Major League Baseball games over four seasons. Born September 26, 1921, he served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1945 during World War II, fighting with the 76th Infantry Division in France and taking part in the Battle of the Bulge before returning to baseball. He reached the majors with the Chicago Cubs, appearing in 1946, 1948, and 1949, with his most extensive action coming in 1948 when he played 80 games. He resurfaced briefly with the Cleveland Indians in 1951, appearing in 11 games. Across his major league career from 1946 to 1951 he batted .248 with 5 home runs and 29 RBIs. The bulk of his professional playing time came in the minor leagues, where his career extended from 1940 through 1957. While with the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League, he hit a grand slam in a 1947 playoff game against the San Francisco Seals. He died August 9, 1986, in Tucson, Arizona, at age 64.
