Clarence Mitchell

Dossier
Clarence Elmer Mitchell (February 22, 1891 – November 6, 1963) was a right-handed pitcher who played 18 seasons in Major League Baseball from 1911 to 1932, appearing for the Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds, Brooklyn Robins, New York Giants, Philadelphia Phillies, and St. Louis Cardinals. One of 17 pitchers grandfathered to continue throwing the spitball after it was banned in 1920, Mitchell was also an unusually capable hitter for a pitcher, posting a .252 career batting average with 133 RBI. He is best remembered for hitting into the only unassisted triple play in World Series history, turned by Cleveland's Bill Wambsganss in Game 5 of the 1920 Series.
