Clark Griffith Portrait

Clark Calvin Griffith (1869–1955), known as "The Old Fox" for his crafty pitching repertoire and shrewder front-office instincts, appears here in the T206 White Border portrait issued during his Cincinnati Reds tenure. The right-hander broke in with St. Louis of the American Association in 1891 and pitched into the second decade of the twentieth century, posting 237 career wins, six straight twenty-win seasons with Cap Anson's Chicago Colts, and the distinction of being one of Ban Johnson's first marquee jumpers when the American League launched in 1901. Griffith managed the New York Highlanders, then the Reds from 1909 through 1911, before the move that defined his second life: he bought into the Washington Senators in 1912 and served as the franchise's owner and patriarch until his death. The T206 portrait shows him in Reds uniform near the end of his Cincinnati run. He died October 27, 1955 in Washington, D.C. and is buried at Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, Maryland. The Hall of Fame elected him in 1946.
