Clint Benedict

Dossier

Clinton Stevenson "Praying Benny" Benedict (1892–1976) was a Canadian ice hockey goaltender who played for the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Maroons across his professional career. He won four Stanley Cup championships and led NHL goaltenders in shutouts seven times. Benedict was the first goaltender to drop to his knees to stop the puck — a technique then illegal that earned him his nickname — and the NHL's first rule change legalized his style of play. He was also the first NHL goaltender to wear a face mask. Benedict is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
