Clinton Benedict
Dossier
Clinton "Praying Benny" Benedict (September 26, 1892 – November 12, 1976) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who played for the Ottawa Senators and the Montreal Maroons. He won four Stanley Cup championships over his career and led league goaltenders in shutouts seven times. Benedict was the first goaltender in NHL history to drop to his knees to stop the puck — a technique then illegal that earned him his nickname and eventually prompted the NHL's first rule change to legalize the style. He was also the first goaltender to wear a face mask in the NHL. He is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
