Cookie Lavagetto

Dossier

Harry Arthur "Cookie" Lavagetto (December 1, 1912 – August 10, 1990) played third base in Major League Baseball from 1934 to 1947. He began his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates before being traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers after the 1936 season, earning four consecutive National League All-Star selections from 1938 to 1941. He missed four seasons serving in the United States Navy during World War II. Lavagetto is best remembered for his game four double in the 1947 World Series, which broke up Bill Bevens's no-hit bid with one out remaining and drove in the winning run. After playing, he managed the Washington Senators from 1957 to 1960 and became the first manager of the Minnesota Twins in 1961.
