Cy Young Boston AL portrait
Dossier
Denton True "Cy" Young (1867–1955) is shown here in his Boston AL portrait pose on E90-1 American Caramel, captured in the uniform of the franchise that became the Red Sox. Born March 29, 1867 in Gilmore, Ohio, the right-hander broke in with Cleveland in 1890 and would carry his career through 1911, finishing with 511 wins — a total no pitcher has approached since. With the Boston Americans from 1901 through 1908 he won the first modern World Series in 1903 and threw a perfect game against Philadelphia in 1904. The E90-1 issue dates to 1909–1911 and was distributed as a premium with American Caramel candy in the Philadelphia trade; Young appears on multiple variations across that run. He died November 4, 1955 in Newcomerstown, Ohio at the age of 88. The pitching award named in his honor was inaugurated by Commissioner Ford Frick the year after his death. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1937, the second class.
