Cy Young Hand

Dossier

Denton True "Cy" Young (1867–1955) won 511 major-league games, a total no pitcher has approached and none is likely to. A right-handed pitcher and hitter, he came up with the Cleveland Spiders in 1890, became the central arm of the early Boston Americans rotation in the brand-new American League, and threw the first perfect game of the modern era in 1904. He returned to Cleveland late in his career to pitch for the Naps from 1909 to 1911 — exactly the window of the T206 White Border tobacco set, in which the "Hand" pose is one of his cards. Major League Baseball's award for the best pitcher in each league has carried his name since 1956, the year after his death. Young died November 4, 1955 in Newcomerstown, Ohio. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1937.
