Dossier

Daniel Webster Litwhiler (August 31, 1916 – September 23, 2011) was an American professional baseball outfielder who played in Major League Baseball from 1940 through 1951 for the Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Braves, and Cincinnati Reds. Called up by the Phillies late in the 1940 season, he batted .345 with a 21-game hitting streak. He was named to the National League All-Star team in 1942 while with Philadelphia. That season he became the first major league outfielder to play an entire schedule without committing an error, and he led all outfielders in fielding percentage for two consecutive years. Traded to the Cardinals during the 1943 season, he was a regular on the St. Louis club that reached the 1944 World Series against the cross-town Browns. After his playing career, Litwhiler became a college baseball coach, leading Florida State University from 1955 to 1963 and Michigan State University from 1964 to 1982. He is also credited with helping develop the radar speed gun for measuring pitch velocity, an early prototype of which is held by the Baseball Hall of Fame.
