David Earl Philley (May 16, 1920 – March 15, 2012) was a switch-hitting outfielder who threw right-handed, born in Paris, Texas and attending East Texas State University before his Major League Baseball debut with the Chicago White Sox in 1941. He served four years as a military policeman during World War II before returning to the majors in 1946. Over an 18-season career spanning eight teams — including the Philadelphia Athletics, Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers, and Philadelphia Phillies — he led American League outfielders in assists three times (1948, 1950, 1953) and batted .299 to lead the Orioles in 1955.
