Del Rice
Dossier
Delbert Rice Jr. (October 27, 1922 – January 26, 1983) was a right-handed catcher who played 17 seasons in Major League Baseball from 1945 to 1961, spending the bulk of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals. A native of Portsmouth, Ohio, Rice made his major league debut on May 2, 1945, after four seasons in the minors. He was never a strong hitter, but his defensive abilities kept him in the majors through an era when catchers who could handle a pitching staff commanded lasting value. He later worked in baseball as a coach and manager.
