Richard Edward Gernert (September 28, 1928 - November 30, 2017) was an American Major League Baseball first baseman and outfielder. He played from 1952 to 1962 for the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds, and Houston Colt .45s. He became the Red Sox' regular first baseman in 1953 and topped 20 home runs that year and again in 1958, batting a career-high .291 in 1956. He was part of the first interleague trade made without waivers, sent from Boston to the Cubs in November 1959, and was a pinch hitter for the 1961 National League pennant-winning Reds. Over 11 seasons he hit .254 in 835 games. He later worked as a coach, minor league manager, and longtime scout.
