Richard Larry Green was born on April 21, 1941, in Sioux City, Iowa, and grew up in Yankton and Mitchell, South Dakota. Forgoing a football scholarship at Michigan State University, he signed with the Kansas City Athletics as an amateur free agent before the 1960 season. Green made his major league debut on September 9, 1963, and settled in as the Athletics' second baseman through 1974, following the franchise to Oakland. He was a member of the "Swingin' A's" teams that won three consecutive World Series championships from 1972 through 1974. In his first full season, 1964, he posted a .990 fielding percentage at second base.
