Don Cardwell

Dossier

Donald Eugene Cardwell (December 7, 1935 – January 14, 2008) was a right-handed pitcher who played in the National League from 1957 to 1970. Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies as an amateur free agent in 1954 and made his major league debut with the club in 1957. Traded to the Chicago Cubs in May 1960, he no-hit the St. Louis Cardinals 4–0 just two days later — the first pitcher in major league history to throw a no-hitter in his first game after being traded. He won 15 games for the Cubs in 1961 and twice won 13 for the Pittsburgh Pirates before joining the 1969 World Series champion New York Mets.
