Edwin Douglas Charles (April 29, 1933 – March 15, 2018) was an American Major League Baseball third baseman who played for the Kansas City Athletics from 1962 to 1967 and the New York Mets from 1967 to 1969. Nicknamed "The Glider" for his fielding and base running, he batted .288 with 17 home runs, 74 runs batted in, and 20 stolen bases in his rookie 1962 season, all of which were career highs. He led the Mets in home runs with 15 in 1968. In 1969 he shared third base duties with rookie Wayne Garrett on the Mets team that won the World Series over the Baltimore Orioles, appearing in four of the five games and scoring the winning run in Game Two. Over his career he batted .263 with 86 home runs and 421 RBIs in 1,005 games. After retiring he scouted and coached in the Mets organization and worked with at-risk youth in the Bronx.
