Edward Wilbur Ainsmith (1890–1981), nicknamed "Dorf," was a right-handed catcher who spent fifteen seasons in Major League Baseball beginning in 1910. Born in Moscow and raised in the United States after his family arrived through Ellis Island, he attended Colby Academy in New Hampshire and broke into professional ball in the New England League in 1908. He spent the bulk of his career with the Washington Senators (1910–1918) before stints with the Detroit Tigers, St. Louis Cardinals, Brooklyn Robins, and New York Giants. In 1,078 career games he posted a .232 average with 707 hits and 317 RBI. After retiring, he worked as a minor league umpire, scout, and manager in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.
