After a college career at Michigan State University, he was drafted by the New York Giants in the fifth round of the 1959 NFL draft before opting for Canadian football. Kelly spent 1960 to 1970 with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, then finished with the Toronto Argonauts from 1971 to 1972. He played 175 consecutive games without missing one. Kelly won three Grey Cups with Hamilton (1963, 1965, 1967) and appeared in the 1971 Grey Cup with Toronto.
