Born in Luray, Virginia, he attended Luray High School. Baker reached the majors with the St. Louis Browns in 1943 and went on to play for the Chicago White Sox (1945-1951), Washington Senators (1952-1953), Boston Red Sox (1953-1954), and Philadelphia Phillies (1954-1955). Across 874 games he compiled a .251 batting average with one home run and 196 runs batted in, profiling as a contact-oriented, light-hitting infielder during the 1940s and early 1950s. After his playing career, Baker became a scout for Washington in 1957 and returned to the field in 1961 as the third base coach for the relocated Minnesota Twins, a role he held through 1964.
