Frank Patrick

Dossier

Frank Patrick (December 21, 1885 – June 29, 1960) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player, coach, manager, and executive. Born in Ottawa and raised in Montreal, he attended McGill University before moving west to British Columbia in 1907. In 1909 he signed with the Renfrew Creamery Kings alongside his brother Lester. After the Patrick family sold their lumber company in 1910, the brothers used the proceeds to co-found the Pacific Coast Hockey Association, the first major professional hockey league in Western Canada. Patrick served as league president and ran the Vancouver Millionaires as player, coach, and manager. He introduced several rules still used today, including the blue line, the penalty shot, and the tracking of assists.
