Fred Marberry

Dossier
Frederick "Firpo" Marberry (1898-1976) was an American right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball from 1923 to 1936, primarily with the Washington Senators. He was the sport's first prominent relief pitcher and has been retroactively credited as the first to record 20 saves in a season, the first to make 50 relief appearances in a season, and the only pitcher to lead the major leagues in saves six times. He appeared in four games of the 1924 World Series, allowing one earned run in eight innings, as Washington won its only championship. Over a 14-season career he compiled a record of 148-88 with a 3.63 ERA in 551 games, including 187 starts. His nickname referenced his resemblance to boxer Luis Firpo.
