Fred Sanford

Dossier
John Frederick Sanford was an American right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball who appeared in 164 games over seven seasons from 1943 to 1951. Born in Garfield, Utah, in 1919, he signed with the St. Louis Browns in 1939 and made three appearances with them in 1943 before his career was interrupted by service in World War II. He returned in 1946 and earned a September call-up after a strong season with the Toledo Mud Hens, pitching shutouts in his first two major league starts against the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox. Used primarily as a starter for the Browns, he led the American League with 21 losses in 1948, finishing 12-21 with a 4.64 ERA while logging heavy innings for a last-place club. He was traded to the New York Yankees in December 1948 and pitched for them through 1951, including their World Series-winning seasons, before a brief stint with the Washington Senators. Sanford died in 2011.
