Dossier

Fritz Ostermueller was a left-handed pitcher who played in the major leagues from 1934 to 1948. He pitched for the Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Browns, Brooklyn Dodgers, and Pittsburgh Pirates over 15 seasons, compiling a record of 114 wins and 115 losses with a 3.99 earned run average and 774 strikeouts. He served as a leading member of the Pittsburgh pitching staff in 1947 and 1948, when he was in his early forties. As a hitter he was capable for a pitcher, batting .234 with 62 runs batted in, though he never hit a home run in the majors. He is credited with the saying, "Home run hitters drive Cadillacs; singles hitters drive Fords," a line later often misattributed to his teammate Ralph Kiner.
