Wilbur Gary Bell, nicknamed "Ding Dong," was born on November 17, 1936, in San Antonio, Texas. A right-handed pitcher, Bell spent most of his 12-year Major League Baseball career with the Cleveland Indians, also pitching for three other clubs between 1958 and 1969. Over 519 games — 233 as a starter — he compiled 121 wins, 1,378 strikeouts, and a 3.68 ERA. Before professional ball, Bell attended San Antonio Junior College and played YMCA and American Legion baseball, as his high school had no team. He was inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
