Gary Rutledge played quarterback in the National Football League for 14 seasons. A Birmingham, Alabama native, he quarterbacked the Alabama Crimson Tide under Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, starting on three SEC Championship teams and earning the starting role in Alabama's 1978 national championship victory. Selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the ninth round of the 1979 NFL draft, he spent most of his professional career as a backup, serving on New York Giants and Washington Redskins teams that won Super Bowl XXI and Super Bowl XXVI, respectively. He later transitioned into coaching after his playing career ended.
