Gary Lynn Sutherland (September 27, 1944 – December 16, 2024) was a professional baseball middle infielder who played 13 seasons in Major League Baseball from 1966 to 1978. A University of Southern California product, he appeared with seven franchises — the Philadelphia Phillies, Montreal Expos, Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers, Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres, and St. Louis Cardinals. Primarily a second baseman, Sutherland compiled a .243 career batting average across 717 games at the position and was regarded for his double-play work, leading all National League second basemen with 110 double plays in 1969. That same year he scored the first run in Montreal Expos history and recorded the first putout in a regular-season MLB game played in Canada.
