Gene Alley

Dossier

Leonard Eugene Alley spent his entire Major League Baseball career as a shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates, appearing in the majors from 1963 through 1973. Born July 10, 1940, in Richmond, Virginia, he was a two-time All-Star regarded as the best all-around shortstop in the National League during the 1966–67 seasons before a recurring right shoulder injury diminished his effectiveness. A contact hitter with strong bunting skills and plus range in the field, Alley participated in 128 double plays in 1966, third most in major league history at the time. He was a member of Pittsburgh teams that won three consecutive NL East titles from 1970 to 1972 and the 1971 World Series.
