George Lee Altman (1933–2025) was a left-handed-hitting, right-handed-throwing outfielder who spent nine full seasons in Major League Baseball, appearing in 991 games and earning three National League All-Star selections. Born in Goldsboro, North Carolina, he attended Tennessee State University before reaching the majors. At 35, Altman began an eight-year career in Nippon Professional Baseball, where he hit 205 home runs, batted .309, and accumulated 985 hits. Standing 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, he was one of the more productive American players to make a sustained transition to Japanese professional baseball during that era.
