William Herman, known as "Germany", was born February 4, 1876 in Chicago, Illinois, and died May 16, 1919 in Saranac Lake, New York. He made his major-league debut in 1901 and was associated chiefly with the Detroit Tigers, with his final big-league appearance coming in 1918, a span of 18 seasons. He stood 5-foot-9 and was listed at 175 pounds, and batted and threw right-handed.
