1917

Dossier

Alfred Earle "Greasy" Neale (1891–1973) played outfield for the Cincinnati Reds from 1916 to 1920, serving as a regular in the lineup across those five seasons. A former end at West Virginia Wesleyan, Neale was part of the Reds club that won the 1919 World Series — the franchise's first championship — and led the team in hits during that Series. He also played end in the Ohio League for Canton, Dayton, and Massillon between 1917 and 1919. By the early 1920s he had shifted entirely to coaching, splitting his time between baseball and football at the collegiate level.
