Hank Borowy was a right-handed pitcher who played in the major leagues from 1942 to 1951. He began his career with the New York Yankees and later pitched for the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Detroit Tigers. Over ten seasons he compiled a record of 108 wins and 82 losses with a 3.50 earned run average and 690 strikeouts. He was named an All-Star in 1944 and 1945. Borowy was a member of the 1943 Yankees team that won the World Series, and he won Game 3 of that Series against St. Louis. In mid-1945 he was sold to the Cubs and went on to lead the National League in earned run average with a 2.14 mark and in winning percentage at .846 that year, splitting his time between the two leagues. He won Game 1 of the 1945 World Series with a shutout and also won Game 6, though the Cubs lost the Series in seven games. He was the last Cubs pitcher to win a World Series game until 2016.
